In a shocking turn of events at the 2023 Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival (LGGPR), Russ Sifers, the beloved owner of Valomilk candy company and connoisseur of speed (or lack thereof), managed to secure the highly coveted black flag during his daring drive in his vintage 1949 MGTC.
Known for its leisurely pace, the MGTC boasts a top speed of 45 to 50 mph on a good day, making it the envy of garden snails worldwide. However, this didn’t stop Sifers from igniting the track with his version of breakneck speed, which, in this case, meant the speedometer needle slightly trembling beyond its usual snoozefest range.
Sifers, a previous recipient of the prestigious Spirit of the Event award, is renowned for his unwavering dedication to period-specific racing gear. Clad in an outfit that would make a 1950s racer blush, complete with goggles, leather gloves, and a scarf fluttering in the wind (albeit at a pace that suggests a light breeze), Sifers brings a unique charm to the LGGPR.
The black flag, traditionally reserved for drivers with a lead foot and an insatiable need for speed, was humorously thrown by the event’s track marshal, Kevin Hinckle, affectionately known as the Hinckle Badger. When asked about the decision, Hinckle simply said, “I just wanted to create a great memory for Russ. Russ is a good sport, and besides, who wouldn’t want to see a vintage MGTC break the sound barrier at 50 mph?”
Sifers, true to his jovial nature, took the black flag in stride. “Well, I always knew my MGTC had the potential for warp speed. It’s just that the rest of the world needs a few more decades to catch up,” he quipped, flashing a grin that could melt even the most stoic of marshals.
As a long-time sponsor of the LGGPR, Sifers continues to embody the spirit of the event, proving that sometimes the slow lane is the most entertaining one. The Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival, a three-day extravaganza for sports cars from 1950 to the modern day, concludes with Sifers and his MGTC taking a well-deserved victory lap around the track (at a speed best described as “easy listening”).
